Theme for the Week          The Door
Verse of the Week:            John 10:7

Mon: Ezekiel 34:1-10          Tues: 2 Peter 2:1-10           Wed: Ezekiel 33:1-9
Thurs:            John 10:1-10                        Fri: Mark 3:22-30
Catechism Reading:
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into hell.
The third day He rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty.
From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
What does this mean?
I believe that Jesus Christ, true God,
begotten of the Father from eternity,
and also true man, born of the Virgin Mary,
is my Lord.
Who has redeemed me, a lost and condemned person,
purchased and won me from all sins,
from death, and from the power of the devil;
not with gold or silver,
but with His holy, precious blood
and with His innocent suffering and death,
that I may be His own
and live under Him in His kingdom
and serve Him
in everlasting righteousness, innocence, and blessedness,
just as He is risen from the dead, lives and reigns to all eternity.
This is most certainly true.

First Sunday in Lent (sermon)

Testify about God
John 8:12-30
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
Our text for this morning comes from the Gospel lesson. Jesus says, "I am the Light of the World. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." The Jews don't believe he can testify about himself in this way.
What can you say about yourself and everyone would believe you? Most of us do not question when someone asks your name. Unless I told you I was the King, you might believe most of what I say about myself. Likewise, if you told me you were 6' 8" and didn't look over 5' 6", we might question your testimony about yourself.
The Jews question Jesus testimony about himself for a couple of reasons. First, because every testimony must be conferred by two or three witnesses. So Jesus says, "In your Law it is written that the testimony of two people is true. I am the one who bears witness about myself, and the Father who sent me bears witness about me."
Second, they do not recognize Jesus to be anything greater than themselves. They see Jesus doing miracles and teaching, which is not much different from themselves. Granted the Jews may not have done many signs, but they probably helped some people out, or even were able to do first aid. Scripture does even testify that some of them were casting out demons. Yet, none of them were going to be so bold to say I AM, nor I am the Light of the World.
For most of us the Light of the World has little more thought than the lamp I turn on in the room. We do not have a great fascination with the Sun, unless it has been dark and gloomy out. Then we see the light of the World in the form of the Sun.
But when Jesus speaks of the Light of the World, he is speaking about more than just the Sun. Just like when he says, "You know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also." He is talking in terms of Creation. God created all things, the Father through the Son by means of the Holy Spirit, together are creator of heaven and earth.
All things were made through him and for him, namely Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ our Lord is the Light of the World, because he has created Light. The first day he said, "Let there be light, and there was light." It was then the fourth day, God created the Sun and Moon.
So it may be difficult for people to recognize that you testify about yourself, without any other support. But it is even worse to testify about yourself and claim to have brought light into the creation. This is saying I AM God. I hope you picked that up. Jesus is saying I AM God.
Remember in Exodus, God said to Moses, “I am who I am.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel, ‘I am has sent me to you.’ ” So Jesus is not just saying he is the Light of the World, which is saying I am God, but in addition he is saying I Am, which is saying I am God.
So if you are going to claim to be God, you had better be able to follow that up. And claiming someone else we don't know testifies to it for you is not going to cut it. So Jesus continues, “I am going away, and you will seek me, and you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come.”
I don't know about you but this does not seem helpful. Even the Jews recognize immediately, Jesus is talking about his death. He is going to die. Others will die in their sins seeking for him, since he died, but they will not find him. Likewise, the death Jesus dies you cannot die. Jesus is God. He dies to sin in our place. He dies with your sin, for the forgiveness of your sin.
He continues, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. I told you that you would die in your sins, for unless you believe that I am he you will die in your sins.” He reminds them once again, He is God. You are from below, does not mean you are of the devil, but could mean you are being ruled by the devil. It more simply means you are created. He is God, and you are not. He is creator, and you are creature. He will die for you, so that you who believe in him will be forgiven of your sins.
It is only finally, when the Son of Man is lifted up for all to see, Jesus is the sacrifice for the forgiveness of all sins. It is then in that sign when it will be boldly confessed, Truly this was/is the Son of God. It is there upon the cross, we see our savior. From the foot of the cross, we can finally see the creator is pleased to send his Son to die for the forgiveness of our sins.
Throughout this Lenten Season, we will hear the many different times Jesus told the people I Am God. He will say it differently, but each time we recognize that Jesus is God, because he was lifted up for the forgiveness of our sins. Amen.
The peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Amen.

The Sunday of the Transfiguration (sermon)

Listen to God Glorify his Name
John 12:20-36a
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
Our text for this morning is from the Gospel lesson. Where Jesus says, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified." Throughout the Gospel of John, the hour has not yet come, but now the hour has arrived. Today, we celebrate the last Sunday before Lent. So we celebrate the last manifestation of God in flesh, before the judgment of this world comes.
Jesus tells these gentiles who have desired to come and find him, that the Son of Man must die. "Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit." The Son of Man has come to die. And the people rightfully can ask, "We have heard from the Law that the Christ remains forever. How can you say that the Son of Man must be lifted up?"
Our short sightedness does not want the Christ to die. We are like St Peter telling the Lord that he can't go and die. We want to see the Son of Man glorified, by this we mean some type of honor, praise, and even worship. Even today Christians around the world come to places like this on Sunday Morning in order to give God praise. They come to offer God their voices. They come to bring their treasures to God.
Just as these Greeks come to Jerusalem to worship, like the Jews, they desire to offer to God something. Does God need your voice? Does God need your praise? Is God glorified by your words, songs, thoughts, and deeds? God does not need you!
Listen, Jesus tells us how God is glorified. "Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life." You have nothing to offer to the one who has given you life. He already owns everything. He has made everything. He is the one who gives you breath, voice, life, even food and drink.
Listen, Jesus tells us how God is glorified. "Now is the judgment of this world; now will the ruler of this world be cast out." It is not you that cast out this ruler of the world. It is not even you who can judge this world. But it is God judging the World. It is God who casts out the devil from Heaven. It is God who glorifies himself, by casting the demons out of you. You can not do any of this.
Listen, Jesus tells us how God is glorified. "And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself." Likewise, "But if [a grain of wheat] dies, it bears much fruit." Jesus is going to die. Jesus is going to glorify his Father's name, by dying on the cross. He is going to be lifted up for all the people to look at his accursed flesh. This is where God is glorified.
You do not get to glorify God. God glorifies himself. Listen to the voice from heaven, "I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again." God has always been glorifying his own name and will continue to glorify his name.
Small Catechism lesson: We pray, Hallowed be Thy Name. What does this mean? God's name is certainly holy in itself, but we pray in this petition that it may be kept holy among us also. How is God's name kept holy? God's name is kept holy when the Word of God is taught in its truth and purity, and we, as the children of God, also lead holy lives according to it. Help us to do this, dear Father in heaven! But anyone who teaches or lives contrary to God's Word profanes the name of God among us. Protect us from this, heavenly Father!
Listen to how God has glorified his name. He has glorified his name by creating a world that was once perfect. He has glorified his name by continuing to care for that world even after it has abandoned him, rejected him, and profaned him. God has glorified himself by calling for himself a people to lead holy lives. God has glorified his name by defending those people. God has glorified his name even by giving those people promises and a hope.
God continued to glorify his name, by delivering these people out of bondage to slavery in Egypt. He continued to glorify his name by bringing judgment upon his own people for their false living, corrupt and vial lifestyles. He even glorified his name by sending his own people into exile, casting out those who would try to rule in his name.
Then the hour came once more for God to glorify his name. He sent forth his Word to become flesh and dwell with his people. He sent that word to manifest itself in the people's eyes, ears, and hearts. The Word of God made flesh in order to glorify the name of God. This very Son of Man must be lifted high upon the Cross. He was crucified for the very people of God.
God glorifies his name, by not just sending his Son to die for the people he claimed long ago. But as Jesus words say, "[Jesus] will draw all people to [himself]." God glorifies himself by killing his Son, casting out the ruler of this world. Yet, he continues to glorify his name, by raising that very son from the dead. This grain of wheat dies and rises again. This is the Light that no darkness can overcome.
You can not glorify the name of the Lord. You can not honor, praise, or offer to God anything he does not already possess. You have nothing. Your lives continue to be ruled and follow after the ruler of this age, culture, or society.
Listen, God is glorifying his name here today. He is glorifying his name by coming to you in His very Word. He has died for the forgiveness of your sins. He has glorified himself by washing you in the blood of Christ. He has glorified you by casting out the demons from your flesh. Christ has claimed you to be a son of the Light, a Son of God.
It is not easy for us to Hate this life, or die to sin. But thanks be to God, that he has drowned you in the waters of Baptism and raised you to new life. Your hour of Judgment has arrived, now LIVE. Amen.
The peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Amen.

And lead us not into temptation.
What does this mean?
God tempts no one.
We pray in this petition that God would guard and keep us

may not deceive us or mislead us
into false belief, despair, and other great shame and vice.
Although we are attacked by these things,
we pray that we may finally overcome them and win the victory.
The Seventh Petition
But deliver us from evil.
What does this mean?
We pray in this petition, in summary,
that our Father in heaven would rescue us
from every evil of body and soul, possessions and reputation,
and finally, when our last hour comes, give us a blessed end,
and graciously take us from this valley of sorrow
to Himself in heaven.

Catechism Reading:
The Third Article: Sanctification
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy Christian church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
What does this mean?
I believe that I cannot by my own reason or strength
believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to Him;
but the Holy Spirit has called me by the Gospel,
enlightened me with His gifts,
sanctified and kept me in the true faith.
In the same way He calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies
the whole Christian church on earth,
and keeps it with Jesus Christ in the one true faith.
In this Christian church He daily and richly forgives all my sins
and the sins of all believers.
On the Last Day He will raise me and all the dead,
and give eternal life to me and all believers in Christ.
This is most certainly true.
