16 Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. 17 And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted. 18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Jesus Christ came into the flesh for one great and mighty purpose. He was going to redeem his people from their sins. He was going to reveal this redemption to the world. So Jesus Christ sends his disciples out into the world to proclaim what he has done. But He does not send them out alone. He sends them out with the Holy Spirit.
But here is the blessing. He sends them out with simple instructions on how to make disciples. These eleven disciples were made disciples by Jesus Christ our Lord. They were chosen by him to carry the banner of Christ into the World. But Jesus gives them another list of instructions. They are to make disciples by baptizing and teaching other people in the true faith.
Jesus Christ's mission is complete through his death upon the cross for the forgiveness of the sins of all mankind. Christ's hands the mission of revealing this truth to his disciples and those who follow in their footsteps. But he reveals something more, even in these last words. Jesus Christ reveals not only that He is true God and true man and even one with the Father, but he reveals the Holy Trinity. The Name of Yahweh is Father, Son and Holy Spirit. This is the one who has guided the people of Israel. This is the one who hung on the cross. This is the one who guides the church still today. All three persons in One God.
Jesus has truly revealed a great deal to his disciples. These disciples have a difficult task when they are to teach others to observe or keep everything he has told them.
