18 But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. 19 You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder! 20 Do you want to be shown, you foolish person, that faith apart from works is useless? 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up his son Isaac on the altar? 22 You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by his works; 23 and the Scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”—and he was called a friend of God. 24 You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone. 25 And in the same way was not also Rahab the prostitute justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out by another way? 26 For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead.
Probably one of my favorite passages in the book of James, "You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe--and shudder!" There are Christians who tell me that we don't need to worry about things beyond our comprehension. The Holy Trinity is truly beyond our comprehension. But it is important to at least believe what the demons know to be true.
The Devil may be able to tell us lies. The Devil may be able to lead God's people into corruption and false doctrine. But the Devil can not deny what he himself know to be certain. The Devil and all his minions know that God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The God of Abraham has granted the gift of faith to his people. The Devil can not tell God or humans that he does not know this to be true.
The Devil will stand there and cheer on liars and thieves. The Devil will give strength and courage to those who teach falsely. He will walk with people who deny the Holy Trinity. But he himself can not unbeleive what he has seen and heard.
If the Devil knows these things, should Christians set them aside for more important things? No, Christians should stand firm. Christians should maintain the truth of who God has revealed himself to be. The God of Israel is Father, Son and Holy Spirit, one God now and Forever.
