22 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 23 “Speak to Aaron and his sons, saying, Thus you shall bless the people of Israel: you shall say to them,
24 The Lord bless you and keep you;
25 the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you;
26 the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.
27 “So shall they put my name upon the people of Israel, and I will bless them.”
Every Sunday there are two Bible passages that I read. The first comes from Matthew 28 which is part of the Gospel Alternative for Holy Trinity Sunday in the Year of Matthew and the other is this passage. The reason why I speak these passages every Sunday is because they are the proclamation of the Name of God to place it upon his people. These passages tell us, the name of God and remind us of his eternal blessing.
The Christian Church in the Sacrament of Holy Baptism marks each baptized person by placing the name of God upon them. Moses was commanded by the Lord to have Aaron bless the people in this manor. With this blessing, the people of Israel would receive the name of the Lord upon the people. Numbers chapter 6 reminds us that God has provided the promises of Baptism and salvation to the people of Israel, even St Paul will point back to the people of Israel being baptized under Moses.
You can read or hear people talk greatly about the threefold statement and the proclamation of the Holy Trinity even to the people of Israel. The Holy Trinity was not something invented by the Christian Church. But I have always appreciated the understanding that, "So shall they put my name upon the people of Israel." This is clearly a proclamation of the Name of the LORD, by His own explanation.
Adam and Eve were created in the image of God. Every Son of Adam and Daughter of Eve have received the image of their sin and corruption. So God has desired to place his name upon His people. He has desired to restore His Image to the people of God. He has taken in the first steps through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. And He has clothed us in Jesus Christ. And He has placed His Holy Name upon you.
