The Second Sunday in Lent (Ps) March 4th

Psalm 8:1-9
1 O Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory above the heavens.
2 Out of the mouth of babies and infants,
you have established strength because of your foes,
to still the enemy and the avenger.
3 When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
4 what is man that you are mindful of him,
and the son of man that you care for him?
5 Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings
and crowned him with glory and honor.
6 You have given him dominion over the works of your hands;
you have put all things under his feet,
7 all sheep and oxen,
and also the beasts of the field,
8 the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea,
whatever passes along the paths of the seas.
9 O Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
The Holy Bible : English standard version. 2001 (Ps 8:1-9). Wheaton: Standard Bible Society.

The LORD our God is the one and only true God of Heaven and Earth. His name is above every other name under heaven. God has created all things. He has placed every star in the heavens and every fish in the sea. Therefore, the Psalmist asks the question, what is man that God should be mindful of him?

Humans often times think a lot of ourselves. Humans are full of pride. Even in the garden of Eden, the desire to become like God was powerful enough to destroy the holiness of mankind. Man's heart is full of wickedness and deceit.

Yet, God has given the son of Man dominion over all things. He has placed him a little lower than the angels. He has given men the power over animals of all kinds. It reminds us of the sinfulness within creation, since animals do not respond well to our commands.

But God is the Lord of All. He provides man with dominion and power over creation. Man is full of sin and corrupt. The Son of Man on the other hand goes to the cross to die for the forgiveness of sins. He restores creation from its fallenness in the fullness of time. God has given mankind high regard, in that he crucified his only begotten Son for you while you were still a sinner.
