The Sixth Sunday after Creation (NT)

1 John 5:1-8
Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of him. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome. For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
This is he who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ; not by the water only but by the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. For there are three that testify: the Spirit and the water and the blood; and these three agree.

I am sure there has been much ink spilled on telling people about verse 8, and the way these three agree or even speak to each of you. But I think that is less significant standing along side verses 1-4. You have overcome the World in Jesus Christ. You have been brought to faith in Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit. He has used the Holy Word of God written, or spoken, to reveal to you the love of God.

God has redeemed you a lost and condemned person. He has called you to believe and be born again of the Spirit and Water. Therefore, you will know that you are a child of God, because you obey everything God commanded. You follow the Ten Commandments, and the greatest Commandment.

Oh, you don't really love the Lord your God with your entire heart? You don't really love your neighbor equal to yourself? You don't love your spouse more than yourself? You are not willing to lay down your life for your faith, family, Spouse, or neighbor? How can you call yourself a Christian?

So maybe your spouse or neighbor is not really a Christian. No? So how do you claim the victory? How are you going to overcome the World? How do you know that Christ has died for you? The Spirit and the water and the blood; and these three agree, they have proclaimed your forgiveness. They have granted you the gift of new life. They have washed you and made you clean. They are your witnesses!
