The Baptism of the LORD (OT)

Isaiah 42:1-9
1 Behold my servant, whom I uphold,
my chosen, in whom my soul delights;
I have put my Spirit upon him;
he will bring forth justice to the nations.
2 He will not cry aloud or lift up his voice,
or make it heard in the street;
3 a bruised reed he will not break,
and a faintly burning wick he will not quench;
he will faithfully bring forth justice.
4 He will not grow faint or be discouraged
till he has established justice in the earth;
and the coastlands wait for his law.
5 Thus says God, the Lord,
who created the heavens and stretched them out,
who spread out the earth and what comes from it,
who gives breath to the people on it
and spirit to those who walk in it:
6 “I am the Lord; I have called you in righteousness;
I will take you by the hand and keep you;
I will give you as a covenant for the people,
a light for the nations,
7 to open the eyes that are blind,
to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon,
from the prison those who sit in darkness.
8 I am the Lord; that is my name;
my glory I give to no other,
nor my praise to carved idols.
9 Behold, the former things have come to pass,
and new things I now declare;
before they spring forth
I tell you of them.”
The Holy Bible : English standard version. 2001 (Is 42:1-9). Wheaton: Standard Bible Society.

It is the voice of the LORD that comes down out of Heaven. It is the Voice of our Father that makes people tremble and fear on Mount Sinai. Now this Voice declares that he does not share or give his glory to another. But when God does something or is about to do something he makes it known to people. The LORD has spoken to Isaiah concerning his Servant upon whom he will place his Spirit.

At the Celebration of the Baptism of our LORD we see these words fulfilled. God who does not share glory places his Spirit upon his Servant in the Jordan River. The Voice of the Father speaks from heaven concerning his Son in whom he his going to do special things. This Beloved Son will do many miracles. But more importantly he is going to bring justice to the Nations. In addition he is going to make a new covenant with the people of God.

This covenant is not based on the Law but on the grace of God. God has given His Beloved Son so that he can get down in the filth and mire of your sins. He will take those sins upon his shoulders with him to the cross. He will carry all the sins of the world to his death. He will bury them in his tomb and lock them away forever. You have been Baptized into this Holy Name which does and speaks all these things for you.
