Proper 13 (OT)

Isaiah 5:1-7
Let me sing for my beloved
my love song concerning his vineyard:
My beloved had a vineyard
on a very fertile hill.
He dug it and cleared it of stones,
and planted it with choice vines;
he built a watchtower in the midst of it,
and hewed out a wine vat in it;
and he looked for it to yield grapes,
but it yielded wild grapes.
And now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem
and men of Judah,
judge between me and my vineyard.
What more was there to do for my vineyard,
that I have not done in it?
When I looked for it to yield grapes,
why did it yield wild grapes?
And now I will tell you
what I will do to my vineyard.
I will remove its hedge,
and it shall be devoured;
I will break down its wall,
and it shall be trampled down.
I will make it a waste;
it shall not be pruned or hoed,
and briers and thorns shall grow up;
I will also command the clouds
that they rain no rain upon it.
For the vineyard of the Lord of hosts
is the house of Israel,
and the men of Judah
are his pleasant planting;
and he looked for justice,
but behold, bloodshed;
for righteousness,
but behold, an outcry!

The Lord God has planted his Vineyard.  This Vineyard is the house of Israel and the men of Judah.  This Vineyard is the people whom God planted in the promise land.  He was the one who fought for them as they conquered the plains, hills, and valleys.  God was the one who did all the difficult work of making everything possible for the Israelites to thrive.  But his vineyard only produces wild grapes.

"What more was there to do for my vineyard, that I have not done in it?  When I looked for it to yield grapes, why did it yield wild grapes?"  There is nothing he has not done for these people.  He delivered them from the hands of their enemies.  He gave them the military strength to remove the wickedness from within their walls.  But the people continue to turn to false gods and idols.  The people continue to listen to false prophets and allow for corruption and wickedness to thrive in their cities.

There is nothing left to do than to start over.  God will remove his protection from around them.  God will break down their strength. and he will cut back their strong branches and allow them to dry up and die.

Like his Vineyard once was it has truly became the same once again.  The people of God (in the Church) turn to false teaching and corrupt their youth.  These people look for physical power and might to accomplish the promises of God.  They look to monetary wealth rather than helping their neighbor.  The corruption with in the church has strayed from her cornerstone and foundation.  It may be time for God once again to come in and sweep his house clean.

People forget there is only one way to salvation.  There is only one way to produce good fruit.  There is only one who gives us strength against our enemies.  There is only one truth.  Jesus Christ is our strength, our way, our truth and our life.  Jesus Christ has had the Word of God preserved through many generations so that his truth may still be proclaimed in the world.  Jesus Christ died at the hands of sinners, of whom he came to save.
