Proper 9 (Ps) July 8th

Psalm 119:81-96
81 My soul longs for your salvation;
I hope in your word.
82 My eyes long for your promise;
I ask, “When will you comfort me?”
83 For I have become like a wineskin in the smoke,
yet I have not forgotten your statutes.
84 How long must your servant endure?
When will you judge those who persecute me?
85 The insolent have dug pitfalls for me;
they do not live according to your law.
86 All your commandments are sure;
they persecute me with falsehood; help me!
87 They have almost made an end of me on earth,
but I have not forsaken your precepts.
88 In your steadfast love give me life,
that I may keep the testimonies of your mouth.
89 Forever, O Lord, your word
is firmly fixed in the heavens.
90 Your faithfulness endures to all generations;
you have established the earth, and it stands fast.
91 By your appointment they stand this day,
for all things are your servants.
92 If your law had not been my delight,
I would have perished in my affliction.
93 I will never forget your precepts,
for by them you have given me life.
94 I am yours; save me,
for I have sought your precepts.
95 The wicked lie in wait to destroy me,
but I consider your testimonies.
96 I have seen a limit to all perfection,
but your commandment is exceedingly broad.

I would hope that all our souls would truly long for salvation.  Most people in the world continue to give no mind to salvation or even their eternal life.  But reading through the Psalms always gives us a little closer look into our own salvation.  The psalms have a very interesting way of bringing us to the point of understanding Law and Gospel.

The Psalmist reminds us through his own struggles of the judgment of our Lord and the various ways we have turned our back on his law.  The Psalmist also urges us to follow suit with his delight and searching through the Law of God.

But it is also in the Psalms where we find the Psalmist writing about salvation and being saved from God's eternal judgment.  This is the time when we also need to remember that Jesus Christ has provided us the way of Salvation.  Jesus Christ is the only true way into everlasting life.

It is this part of Psalm 119, which reminds us of the steadfast love of God and the commitment of the Psalmist to his confession of faith.  The Laws of God are firmly fixed.  The truth of God is likewise firmly fixed and can not be changed.  It is this truth which reminds us of our place before God, but also reminds us of our confession of Faith.  Jesus Christ has died for the forgiveness of our sins.  Jesus Christ has risen from the dead.  Jesus Christ has paved the level path of our salvation and it is only through Jesus Christ, anyone can hope to be saved.  All other paths lead to everlasting damnation.
