Luke
23:50-56
50 Now there was a man named
Joseph, from the Jewish town of Arimathea. He was a member of the council, a
good and righteous man, 51 who had not consented to their
decision and action; and he was looking for the kingdom of God. 52 This man went to Pilate and
asked for the body of Jesus. 53 Then he took it down and
wrapped it in a linen shroud and laid him in a tomb cut in stone, where no one
had ever yet been laid. 54 It was the day of Preparation,
and the Sabbath was beginning. 55 The women who had come with
him from Galilee followed and saw the tomb and how his body was laid. 56 Then they returned and
prepared spices and ointments.
On the
Sabbath they rested according to the commandment.
Many
people only read this text on Good Friday or Passion Sunday. But I feel there
is a place for texts like these to be read any Sunday. The Christmas theme of
Christ once again being wrapped in linen cloth and placed where no one had ever
yet been laid. (I don’t think many people laid down
in a manger before that night.)
Joseph
comes to take the body of Jesus. He comes to take this body and place it in a
cave, den, or tomb. He comes to take care of this beloved person. The woman
likewise set out to prepare for to take care of the dead body of Christ. But
they will soon learn that the body will come out alive.
Daniel
was caught because he was praying to the Lord. Daniel was placed, sealed in a
den, cave, or tomb. People would have bought and prepared for his death upon
the opening of the tomb. But Daniel likewise comes out alive, and unharmed.
But here
is the real phrase I think connects these texts. Through all that is going on
with Daniel and the death of Jesus. “On the Sabbath they rested
according to the commandment.” They continue to observe God’s command, blessing on the Seventh Day of Creation. God
blessed the Sabbath day. God commanded his people to remember the Sabbath day,
and study his word and pray. With all that is going on in the world these
people are still willing to rest, not in death but in the Word of God.
