Proper 14 (G)

Matthew 9:27-38
27 And as Jesus passed on from there, two blind men followed him, crying aloud, “Have mercy on us, Son of David.” 28 When he entered the house, the blind men came to him, and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They said to him, “Yes, Lord.” 29 Then he touched their eyes, saying, “According to your faith be it done to you.” 30 And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly warned them, “See that no one knows about it.” 31 But they went away and spread his fame through all that district.
32 As they were going away, behold, a demon-oppressed man who was mute was brought to him. 33 And when the demon had been cast out, the mute man spoke. And the crowds marveled, saying, “Never was anything like this seen in Israel.” 34 But the Pharisees said, “He casts out demons by the prince of demons.”
35 And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction. 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; 38 therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”

How come when you tell people to keep something quite they always seem to tell others about it, but if you tell them to spread the message they are silent?  It seems very simple.  If you tell people to keep this a secret, they might actually tell someone about Jesus.  But maybe there is something greater going on here.

It is different with Jesus because he gives these people something more precious than words or a Tory about life.  Jesus heals these people of their blindness and demons.  He makes these people better.  But all he gives us are words.  Jesus does not give us anything more than promises of some future hope.  Jesus does not give us a real gift that will loosen our tongues.  This is why we ask him to heal us of diseases, bring us rain, and shower us with physical blessings.

But Jesus has given us a greater gift than he even offered to these people.  Jesus provided us with a perfect sacrifice for our greatest disease.  He sacrificed himself for our sins.  He offers us his own glory as a son to each of you.  There is no greater gift than this that a man lay down his life for another.  Jesus offers you eternal life.  So keep your mouth shut about it, because you don't want to spend eternity with just anyone.  The harvest is plentiful but just pick the choice crops even though Jesus did for all the sins of the world.
