Proper 16 (CL)

Galatians 6:1-10
6 Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. 2 Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. 3 For if anyone thinks he is something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself. 4 But let each one test his own work, and then his reason to boast will be in himself alone and not in his neighbor. 5 For each will have to bear his own load.
6 Let the one who is taught the word share all good things with the one who teaches. 7 Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. 8 For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. 9 And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. 10 So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.

How do we do good and love one another as Christ has loved us?  Does this mean we treat everyone with respect and accept whatever path of life they choose for themselves?  Does this mean we protect them from any form of harm or danger and never let their feet be struck upon a stone?  Or does this mean providing them with all kinds of trials and tell them to live a Life Holy and Perfect?

St Paul tells the Galatians that if they are caught in a sin or transgression, they need to restore each other.  St Paul tells them to keep watch over themselves.  Take care of each other even during troubled times.  Each person has a load to care or a cross to bear.  But we need to teach each other the truth in purity.  They need to be instructed in what is right and what is wrong.  Because what a person sows that is what he will reap.

How do we love one another like Christ loved us?  Tell them the truth of their transgressions.  Help carry their burdens and lead them away from sowing corruption.  Point them to the cross of Christ where the sins of the world have been paid.  Remind them of Christ's blessed resurrection which gives us all hope of our eternal life in Jesus.  Jesus tells us this is the Love of God, that he gave his only begotten Son for their sins.

Let us not mock God and deceive ourselves into thinking we do not sin, but remind ourselves of the Love of God to save us from our sins.  We are sinful human beings and in need of a Savior.  That Savior is Jesus Christ our Lord, who has redeemed us from our transgressions.  He does not protect us from troubled times, but walks with us through troubled times.
