Proper 23 (G)

Mark 4:35-41
35 On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” 36 And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him. 37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. 38 But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” 39 And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40 He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?” 41 And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”

Who is this sitting next to you in the boat?  Have you ever ran across a celebrity and didn't recognize them.  Maybe you had a special guest at some event, and didn't even realize they were standing behind you when you asked how important he really is?  I can't remember the last time, it happened to me.  But there have be a couple of times when I have sat in a cafeteria and there have been important people around me that I never realized until too late.

Jesus calms the storm and his disciples reaction is "who is this?"  Who is this Jesus who they have been traveling with for so long.  This is definitely something out of the normal.  Jesus has shown power over the sea and the wind.  Jesus has revealed himself to be someone of great power.  He is able to do things that others can not.

The natural turn would be for me to ask you who you think Jesus is.  But I would rather just tell you.  Jesus is the only Son of God.  He is the Word of God in the flesh.  He is the one by whom all things were created.  He is the one who was sent by the Father as the sacrificial lamb.  He was crucified died and buried.  But He lives and reigns to all eternity, so that he will one day come and join you with all believers.  This is the same God who brought his people out of the Land of Egypt.  This is the same God who caused rain, drought, and plagues to come upon people throughout the World.  Who is this Jesus?  The one in control.
