Proper 23 (GA)

Mark 7:24-30
24 And from there he arose and went away to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And he entered a house and did not want anyone to know, yet he could not be hidden. 25 But immediately a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit heard of him and came and fell down at his feet. 26 Now the woman was a Gentile, a Syrophoenician by birth. And she begged him to cast the demon out of her daughter. 27 And he said to her, “Let the children be fed first, for it is not right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.” 28 But she answered him, “Yes, Lord; yet even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.” 29 And he said to her, “For this statement you may go your way; the demon has left your daughter.” 30 And she went home and found the child lying in bed and the demon gone.

I was just reading this text a couple of weeks ago.  But how things strike you differently.  Look at the effort Jesus takes to get away from this woman.  Jesus goes to the region of Tyre and Sidon, apparently to hide.  He does not go to search out for people, but to hide. He did not want anyone to know he was there.  "Yet he could not be hidden."  This woman finds him.

When she finds him, she immediately thinks "Oh I should leave him alone he must be deep in thought."   "Oh, I do not want to disturb him, he is so busy."  "Oh, he already knows all my problems why should I bother him further."  All these maybe how we approach our Pastors, but they are not how this woman approaches Jesus.

She comes straight out and falls down at his feet and requests him to heal her daughter.  Jesus further not wanting to deal with her (so it appears), calls her a dog undeserving of children's bread.  But the children feed their vegetables to the dogs anyway.  No, she goes for the crumbs of that fall from the messy children's table.  Jesus is moved by this statement and casts out the demon from her child.

There are many times when we may think Jesus is trying to hide from us.  But he is always there were he promises to be.  He is there in his Word, offering instruction and forgiveness.  Jesus is there to remind us that we are unworthy dogs.  Jesus is there also reminding us that he has mercifully made us his children.  God even stands on guard to cast out your demons.
