Proper 23 (NTA)

Hebrews 11:29-31
29 By faith the people crossed the Red Sea as on dry land, but the Egyptians, when they attempted to do the same, were drowned. 30 By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they had been encircled for seven days. 31 By faith Rahab the prostitute did not perish with those who were disobedient, because she had given a friendly welcome to the spies.

The Author to the Hebrews truly reminds us of the great heroes of the the faith.  There are many people even before Christ is born who have walked in faith.  Here he recalls those who saw the marvelous works God has done in the Land of Egypt.  He also reminds us of those who saw the Walls of Jericho fall.

But lastly he reminds us of the Faith of Rahab.  Rahab must have watched as they were marching around the city Seven days.  She probably heard shouts from both sides wondering what was going to happen.  It even says, "for her house was built into the city wall, so that she lived in the wall."

Think of what it must have been like for Rahab.  But she trust in the word of spies?  She trusts in their words as being from God himself.  She trusts in the promise that she will be rescued.  Even when the Walls of Jericho fell down, Rahab was rescued.  She did not perish with the rest of the city of Jericho, but she lived and was even listed in the genealogy of King David.

Often times we take examples like this and think how we do not measure up to their example.  I do not know what I would have thought watching the Israelites march for seven days.  I do not know what I would have done as the walls of Jericho were falling around my house.

But God does?  God gave Rahab the faith to stay in her house and not run into the streets to die.  God gave the Israelites the faith and strength to walk around the city for Seven Days.  God judged the people Jericho by making the walls fall and leading his children into battle.  God is the one who strengthens you in the true faith as well.
