Proper 28 (GA)

Mark 13:24-31

24 “But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, 25 and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. 26 And then they will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. 27 And then he will send out the angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven.
28 “From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near. 29 So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that he is near, at the very gates. 30 Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. 31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

Jesus tells us what is going to happen to the world around us.  God will send out his angels and they will gather his people from all the earth.  Learn from the fig tree.  This generation will not pass away until all these things have take place.  The Sun will darkened and the Moon will not be there to give light.  The heavens will be shaken, and the son of Man will be going on the clouds.

The Son of Man coming on the clouds always makes me think of the coming of the Lord.  But the Lord was taken up on the clouds at his ascension.  The Day turned Dark while Jesus was nailed to the cross.  When Christ gave up his spirit the earth quaked, but did heaven.  What about stars falling from heaven?

When Jesus died on the cross the world was judged.  When Jesus Christ was crucified God sent out his messengers to call people from the ends of the earth to true faith.  God continues to call and gather his chosen people from the four winds.

Jesus proclaims a day of judgment, but it is also a day of rejoicing.  God darkens his creation, only to bring light through faith in Jesus Christ.  This is the truth, which God has proclaimed.  This will not pass away, even though heaven and earth may pass away.
