The Second Sunday after Epiphany (CL)

Mark 1:16-20
16 Passing alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 17 And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” 18 And immediately they left their nets and followed him. 19 And going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who were in their boat mending the nets. 20 And immediately he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants and followed him.

Thou shalt Honor thy Father and thy Mother.  This means you don't leave them alone sitting in a boat in the middle of the lake.  So it is a good thing Zebedee had some extra help.  But they still leave their father in order to follow Jesus.

I was once told that the Church needs James and John, and people like them.  The Church needs people who are willing to become fishers of men.  There needs to people to go out into the harvest field and call tares to become wheat.  God will continue to call people to leave their family and homeland to spread his Word to the four corners of the earth.  God will continue to make fishers of men.

But not everyone has to become a fisher of men.  Not everyone had to follow Jesus down the road from town to town to become a Christian.  Not everyone has to become a Missionary or Pastor or Preacher to be a Christian.  Some people can follow the Zebedee path.  Zebedee stays with his boat and does his vocation as fisherman, father, and Jew.  Zebedee works to support and aid the work of his sons and Jesus.

Some people are called to leave the Boat and other people are called to stay in the boat.  Both people should remember Christ died for their sins.  Both people should speak and confess the testimony they have received.
