The First Sunday in Lent (GA)

John 6:52-59
52 The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” 53 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54 Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. 55 For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. 56 Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. 57 As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever feeds on me, he also will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like the bread the fathers ate, and died. Whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.” 59 Jesus said these things in the synagogue, as he taught at Capernaum.

Who could read this text and but think of what is offered at the Lord’s Table?  The people of God were once told not to eat flesh with blood in it, because that is the lifeblood of the animal.  But here the Son of the Most High tells us we have to eat his flesh and his blood in order to have life (in Jesus Christ).

Jesus Christ offers his very body and blood to each of us to consume.  He does this physically and literally, just as he actually provides all believers with his lifeblood and life eternal in Jesus.

Do not think of cannibalism. Do not think about vampirism. Don’t even think of complexity of How can God do that.  Listen to the Word God has pronounced to you.  Think of the testimony that has been repeated by multiple sources.  Remember God is God and you are not.  I have a friend who reminds me, a god that I can comprehend could never be the true God.

Jesus Christ has died.  Jesus Christ is risen.  Jesus Christ will come again, but for now he comes to each of us in blood (sometimes judgment and sometimes grace).
