The Sunday of the Transfiguration (Ps) February 10th

Psalm 29:1-11
Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings,
ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness.
The voice of the Lord is over the waters;
the God of glory thunders,
the Lord, over many waters.
The voice of the Lord is powerful;
the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.
The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;
the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon.
He makes Lebanon to skip like a calf,
and Sirion like a young wild ox.
The voice of the Lord flashes forth flames of fire.
The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness;
the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.
The voice of the Lord makes the deer give birth
and strips the forests bare,
and in his temple all cry, “Glory!”
10  The Lord sits enthroned over the flood;
the Lord sits enthroned as king forever.
11  May the Lord give strength to his people!
May the Lord bless his people with peace!

The Voice of the Lord is very powerful.  It continues to speak to every nation and generation.  The Voice of the Lord is speaking through people.  The Voice of the Lord is speaking through the written Word of God.  The Voice of the Lord is speaking with Water.  The Voice of the Lord is speaking with Bread and Wine.

The Psalmist reminds us of the power of God's word.  God spoke creation into existence from nothing.  God spoke in lightning and thunder from Mount Sinai.  God spoke in a still small voice to Elijah.  God spoke to Kings and Authorities to make war.  God spoke through cloud and fire.  These are the ways God has spoken to his people.

God speaks to his people in horror.  God speaks to his people breaking and tearing them to pieces.  You are sinful and corrupt.  You are unclean.  If the Voice of God were to speak to you, you would be killed.  You are not worthy, nor holy.  You need to be washed away and drowned.

God speaks to his people in love.  This is the Word of God made flesh.  He offers life to his people. He offers them salvation through the blood of the Lamb.  There is no greater love than this, that a father would lay down the life of his only Son for your life.  God loves you so much that he continues to call, gather, and enlighten you by the Voice of the Lord speaking to you.
