Judges 6:36-40
36 Then
Gideon said to God, “If you will save Israel by my hand, as you have said, 37 behold, I am laying
a fleece of wool on the threshing floor. If there is dew on the fleece alone,
and it is dry on all the ground, then I shall know that you will save Israel by
my hand, as you have said.” 38 And
it was so. When he rose early next morning and squeezed the fleece, he wrung
enough dew from the fleece to fill a bowl with water. 39 Then Gideon said to God, “Let not your anger
burn against me; let me speak just once more. Please let me test just once more
with the fleece. Please let it be dry on the fleece only, and on all the ground
let there be dew.” 40 And
God did so that night; and it was dry on the fleece only, and on all the ground
there was dew.
I wonder how many people have tried this. There must have
been a few over the years willing to place a fleece of wool out in the yard. But
here is the trick. How do you get dew on the fleece one night and then the next
night no dew on the fleece but all around? The fleece of wool makes for a very
sold test. Gideon could be certain of what God desired him to do.
There is a much more serious question to be asked. I thought
we were not supposed to put the Lord God to the test? Gideon tests the Lord not
once but twice. The Lord God commands that we all trust in him above all
things. We are not supposed to test him. We are not supposed to think less of
him.
But is it wrong to test what God has said to us? God would
encourage us to search the scriptures. Jesus encourages people to listen
repeatedly to the Word of God in order to understand and strengthen our faith.
St Paul praises the Bereans for examining the scriptures daily to see if these
things were true. It is our Job still today, to search the scriptures and
confirm the truth.
The truth is very simple. Jesus Christ has paid the price to
redeem his people. God sent his only son to save his people from their enemies.
God proved to Gideon that he was sending him for this task. Jesus proved that
he was sent for the task of Salvation by Miracles and his teachings. God did
all these things to save you.
