Proper 6 (GA)

John 1:1-14
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.
The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. 11 He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. 12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

This text points to Jesus Christ being there at Creation. And nothing was created apart from him. Jesus is the true Word of God made flesh to dwell among his people. He comes to perform the ultimate sacrifice for their sins, even if they do not know it.

St John tell us about John the Baptist bearing witness and testifying concerning Christ. St John is also writing this Gospel to bear witness to what he himself saw and heard. He does not come as the light or the life, but to bear witness to Jesus.

It is therefore the task and responsibility of all Christians to bear witness to Christ. It is our job to call and witness to others as to their salvation through the one who created all life and is the Light of the World. Each of us must also remember that the children of God are not made by blood, desires of the flesh, or anything within man. It is God who has made his people to be children of God.

It is God the Father who predestined you to be saved, it is Jesus who claimed you to be his own, it is the Holy Spirit who has called you by the Gospel and enlightened you. You have been made a child of the Light, but it is God who shines the Light of Christ in you and out from you.
