The Sunday of Confession (G)

Mark 10:46-52
46 And they came to Jericho. And as he was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a great crowd, Bartimaeus, a blind beggar, the son of Timaeus, was sitting by the roadside. 47 And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” 48 And many rebuked him, telling him to be silent. But he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” 49 And Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” And they called the blind man, saying to him, “Take heart. Get up; he is calling you.” 50 And throwing off his cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus. 51 And Jesus said to him, “What do you want me to do for you?” And the blind man said to him, “Rabbi, let me recover my sight.” 52 And Jesus said to him, “Go your way; your faith has made you well.” And immediately he recovered his sight and followed him on the way.

What do you do when people tell you to shut up? This is the most interesting thing about this passage for me. The Blind man sat by the road and he cried. He cried, “have mercy on me!” Everyone told him to shut his mouth. They wanted to keep him quiet. He shouted all the more.

Many of us do not want to talk about asking for mercy. We want to hear about all the splendid things God has done for us. But they do not care about focusing on their needs. You are in need of mercy just as much as the blind man. You may not need to receive your eye sight (because you are reading this). But you are in need of mercy.

Lord have mercy upon us all. Christ has had mercy upon you. Christ has listened to your cry for mercy. He knows all your sins. He knows all the times you have kept quiet. He knows when you have shied away from your confession (of faith and sins). The Lord forgives you all your sins. Your faith has made you well. Christ has healed you.
