Sunday of the Flood (NTA)

Acts 10:9-16
The next day, as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the housetop about the sixth hour to pray. 10 And he became hungry and wanted something to eat, but while they were preparing it, he fell into a trance 11 and saw the heavens opened and something like a great sheet descending, being let down by its four corners upon the earth. 12 In it were all kinds of animals and reptiles and birds of the air. 13 And there came a voice to him: “Rise, Peter; kill and eat.” 14 But Peter said, “By no means, Lord; for I have never eaten anything that is common or unclean.” 15 And the voice came to him again a second time, “What God has made clean, do not call common.” 16 This happened three times, and the thing was taken up at once to heaven.

God has made all the things clean. St Peter looks at this large variety of animals, reptiles, and birds, and all he sees is unclean things. But God has made these things clean. He has cleansed these common animals and made them clean for St Peter to eat.

There are many things people tell us not to consume in our life. Sometimes it is because they will make us sick. Sometimes it is because they smell horrible, or have made us sick in the past. But when God lets down a tablecloth with all this food on it are you going to be the picky eater?

St Peter was hungry and God provided him with food. St Peter was likewise supposed to spread the good news to the nations, and God provided Gentiles to hear him preach. God provides for his people. Here he has proclaimed that all foods are ritually clean to eat. He places all animals together.

Even when Noah entered the ark he was supposed to take 7 pairs of clean animals. When he exited the ark with the various families of animals, Noah killed some of those clean animals and ate them. This was the first time humans were commanded to eat meat. Here is the first time St Peter is commanded to do likewise, “Kill and eat!” God is making all things clean, just as he has made you clean by Jesus’ blood.
