Proper 11 (GA)

Mark 3:31-35
31 And his mother and his brothers came, and standing outside they sent to him and called him. 32 And a crowd was sitting around him, and they said to him, “Your mother and your brothers are outside, seeking you.” 33 And he answered them, “Who are my mother and my brothers?” 34 And looking about at those who sat around him, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! 35 For whoever does the will of God, he is my brother and sister and mother.”

After Jesus is becoming a spectacle for the world to see, his family comes to visit him. They come to find out if the rumors are true. All of us have parents and family members that worry about us. We have people that would worry if our public image was demon possessed.

But there is a greater issue here for the people of Israel. Most of the people following Jesus would define themselves as Jews because they are descendants of Abraham or Judah. But Jesus tells them point blank, family is not about who you are related to. Family is about those who do the Will of their Father. Family is about people doing things together. Family is about loving each other and taking care of one another.

Jesus is the Son of the Most High. He is the one who does His father’s will. He lives the perfect and Holy life. He is the one who fulfills all the demands of the Law. Jesus Christ is the Lord who will lay down his life for the Father’s Children. He is the one who makes You holy. He is the one who makes you of part of his family.

Israel is about being a part of Jesus’ family or God’s Family.
