Sunday of Moses (Ps) October 2nd

Psalm 106:16-23
16 When men in the camp were jealous of Moses
and Aaron, the holy one of the Lord,
17 the earth opened and swallowed up Dathan,
and covered the company of Abiram.
18 Fire also broke out in their company;
the flame burned up the wicked.
19 They made a calf in Horeb
and worshiped a metal image.
20 They exchanged the glory of God
for the image of an ox that eats grass.
21 They forgot God, their Savior,
who had done great things in Egypt,
22 wondrous works in the land of Ham,
and awesome deeds by the Red Sea.
23 Therefore he said he would destroy them—
had not Moses, his chosen one,
stood in the breach before him,
to turn away his wrath from destroying them.
The Holy Bible : English standard version. 2001 (Ps 106:16-23). Wheaton: Standard Bible Society.

The People of Israel so easily forget. They have come only as far as Mount Sinai and already forget who delivered them for Slavery. They made for themselves gods of metal and the image of a calf. They looked to created things for their strength and protection. But where do you put your fear and trust.

Would you have been some of those who were envious of Moses? Would you have rebelled against Moses and Aaron after wandering for years? Would you have been consumed with fire or swallowed up by the earth? Or do you just fall in the category of forgetting God. These people walked across the Red Sea on dry ground and yet they fell away. What makes you think you are better?

These people were punished for their inequity. You can recall the disasters against Egypt. You should also remind yourself of the disasters that befell Israel. Moses stood in the breach before God. Moses stood up to God reminding him of his promises. God turned from his anger because of Moses' words. God turned from his anger because of his Son. Jesus is the one who stands up and takes God's wrath upon himself so you may have life.
