Proper 6 (GA)

Matthew 7:21-27
21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’
24 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. 26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”

This passage gives me great intrigue.  Jesus recalls people who say, "Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?"  This passage if not any other reminds me that outward appearance means nothing.  It does not matter what a man says or does in his life, but only where his salvation lies.

Not all the people sitting in church on Sunday morning will be saved.  Not all the people who are on church rosters will be saved.  Where do you put your certainty for salvation?  Do you put your certainty in your church membership?  Do you put your certainty in your knowledge of Scripture or the World?  Where do you put your hope and trust?

The Wise man trusts in the most solid and certain foundation.  The Wise man puts his trust in the one place it will never be destroyed.  Jesus Christ is our solid rock and foundation.  It is Jesus Christ who has died for our sins.  He is the one who has provided salvation for you and me.

Not everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord trusts only in the LORD God for his salvation.  Not everyone who acts righteously in the church is truly righteous in his heart.  So where have you built your house?  Where is your foundation with the foolish man or the wise man?

Listen to the Word of God.  Listen to the Words of Christ Jesus.  His words will set you free.  His words provide you with salvation and forgiveness of sins.  Jesus Christ, the Holy Word of God, is our certain foundation who lives and reigns eternally.
