Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life,
bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb 2 through the middle of
the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of life
with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of
the tree were for the healing of the nations. 3 No longer will there be anything accursed, but
the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship
him. 4 They will see
his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. 5 And night will be no more. They will need no
light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign
forever and ever.
The tree of Life along with the river of life, are given to heal the nations. They are given to heal the entire creation from all things that brought death into their existence. The tree of life is found on either side of the river. There is no place in this new creation, which you can escape from the gift of life. The river is not a blockade but a flowing water of life.
The tree of life yields its fruits in each month. The tree of life provides fruit and its leaves provide medicinal healing. The tree of life is simply the life giving cross of Jesus Christ. All these things are only to carry forward the metaphor. This new creation is full of life.
Look around the world and you will find death all around. Look upon the suffering of your neighbors. This life is full of suffering. It is a very simple reality, that we live in a world full of death. Each of us are walking around as dead people. Each of us is dead in our trespasses and transgressions. But we are even born as dead people in sin.
Jesus Christ comes to heal not just you and me, but all of creation. Jesus Christ the Lamb of God comes to bring us the gift of a river and a tree. These gifts flow from the throne of God and the Lamb itself, because he provides us with life. He provides all his creation with new life. This is the resurrection, a world filled with life and death no longer has any hold over you.
