29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.’ 31 I myself did not know him, but for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel.” 32 And John bore witness: “I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. 33 I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.”
This text is selected for its strong connection to the New Testament lesson from Revelation Chapter 5. John the Baptist points to Jesus Christ as the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the World. John then testifies to the Baptism of our Lord.
That gets us to verse 34: "And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God." Do you bear witness to what you have seen? Most of us are willing to talk about the News items. Most of us even talk about sporting events we have seen. Some of us will even bear witness about some public event. We do like to offer our personal witness to what we have been told? Are we willing to bear witness to what someone else has seen? Generally, we consider the source. If it was someone we trust, or it makes sense we might repeat it. Most people do not want to make fools of themselves or be called a liar.
So can we trust the witnesses in scripture? Do we think God is going to make a fool out of us? This is funny. God only makes fools out of people that don't trust him. John the Baptist was no fool! He testified to the Lamb. St John was no fool and he testified to these words. St Paul was no fool neither were the other witnesses to the Fact: Christ was crucified and is risen.
Don't be a fool but listen to the forgiveness of sins. The lamb of God died for the forgiveness of your sins.
